Rumor: Hawks Waiving Shaquem Griffin

Not confirmed yet, but word has it that we're releasing Shaquem Griffin, one of the more inspirational players to have ever worn a Seahawks uniform:

The Seattle Seahawks are waiving linebacker Shaquem Griffin, according to The Athletic's Michael-Shawn Dugar.

NBC Sports Northwest's Joe Fann wrote that Griffin has promise as an edge-rusher but that his usage was too limited to warrant a place on the 53-man roster: "Griffin showed flashes as an edge-rusher in 2019 with his elite speed. He had one sack in the divisional round against the Packers. The problem is that, similarly to a speedy receiver whose only trait is going deep, Griffin's ability as an edge-rusher is too situational."

The re-acquisition of Bruce Irvin is likely what made Griffin expendable. We had the worst pass rush in the league and Griffin's long suit was supposed to be as an edge rusher.

Not a rumor anymore, it's true. Figured him and our favorite TE, Willson will also be a numbers crunch cut.

Paul Richardson is another somewhat surprise that didn' t make it to the 53:

This year's practice squad is so different. 16 players, and no restriction on prior length of duty, which i think was 3 years out of college.
You could put a 10 year vet, if he agreed to it.

Also, the NFL is waiving the limit on returning players from IR. No limit and I think it's down to 2 or 3 weeks to allow for any Covid cases to be worked out without losing the player(s) for the year.

What a bummer. Hopefully he'll be back. Getting cut from the Seahawks doesn't have absolute finality to it.

Yea, we just signed him, too. I suppose bringing back Josh Gordon made Richardson expendable.

The article says we can add 2 more to the PS as well. It's also interesting that they picked up another LB considering they
drafted and kept 3 young LBs the last 2 drafts. D'Andre Walker was drafted in 2019 but sat out the season with an injury.
Perhaps it's just a matter of they wanted to select him last year but was gone before they had the chance.

Lots of interesting moves across the NFL. The new rules for 2020 includes that any player initially on the '53' man final roster may be put on IR and come back after 3 weeks, with no limit. If you had put the player on IR before the cut-down to 53, he's out the whole year.
So you saw a ton of players be put on IR today, opening up roster spots across the league that wouldn't of been there otherwise. Phil Haynes was put on IR and it opens up a roster spot --

River, IF they are signed the PSquad, can other teams claim them?

Obi, I know in past years, if you sign a player from someone else's Practice Squad, they had to sign that player to the 53 man roster. There is no lateral moves from one team to another on Practice Squads.

Not sure about this year though if you can do that. I would think you still could, but not sure with the Covid rules. I do know that the PS number went from 10 to 16 this year.

What he said.

I assume that you can't sign a player from one practice squad to another or it wouldn't make a lot of sense for a team to sign them to a practice squad if it didn't give the team some sort of rights to retaining that player's services. But they've changed a lot of things to the rules regarding practice squads and I haven't kept up with them.
