Hawks Release Joey Hunt, Branden Jackson

Postby RiverDog » Mon Jul 27, 2020 8:31 am

Hunt's release is a bit of a surprise and appears to be a cap casualty as these two move saves us $4.26M. He was never going to be the long term answer and was marginal as a backup. It looks like Pocic will be our backup center.

Jackson wasn't a big contributor on a poor DL so his release should come as no surprise. The two moves gives us $18+M in total cap space. Do we have our eyes on Clowney?

Gotta think they are now talking to one of Clowney or Griffen about a 1 year deal. I saw this morning that prior to the trade for Adams, he agreed to play this season under his current deal, so his cap hit will remain the same until at least next year where he will most likely get an extension.

Landing one of those 2 would really get me excited about our D after last year's debacle.

I hope so, too, and yea, landing either one of those two, especially Clowney, couldn't help but make our defense lots better that last year's bunch. But as the article points out, this could just be a move that was precipitated by the changes to training camp rules due to the coronavirus crisis. Cutting these guys now gives them time to catch on with another team and it allows for another couple bodies on a reduced size TC roster. No sense taking up space/repetitions on a known quantity that you were probably going to cut anyway.

We can hope it was to clear Cap space for Clowney, but they want to get the roster down to
80 players so they don't have to split the practices. So maybe it's just that.

Not sure exactly what their cap space is (I read around $18MM), or if that's enough to do a deal with Clowney. And I don't know if it includes the draft class. With just a few days before training camp, the Hawks have only signed 2 of their 8 draft picks. Unusual.

OFF TOPIC: Quote from Pete Carroll on FB in 2020:

"This year, this practice squad’s gonna be important, because you may have to use a bunch of those guys in games during the season. Heaven forbid you get a position group smoked. That could happen. If you lose a position group, you lose ‘em for 10 to 13 days. What if you lose both quarterbacks? But we got a plan for that. They’re not gonna be in the same meeting room.”
