Apparently we have signed Greg Olsen. Looks like a one year deal at around 7 mil... He is old (35) but still was relatively productive for the Panthers last season (50 catches, 600 yards, and 2 TD's).

I didn’t know he was that old. 7M on an oft injured 35 y/o tight end seems steep. I’d love to be wrong.

This doesn't surprise me at all. Russ was pressing hard for him and Russ has juice with the Seahawks.
As for injuries, they're more than just a little bit overstated; he's started all 16 games for 9 straight seasons befor breaking his foot in 2017, had some issues with that recovery but looks to be 100% now.

$7M is reasonable for a TE with Pro Bowl ability. I know that I'm not alone about my concerns about his inline blocking, but I doubt that we would have brought him in if he didn't have the ability to at least hold his own.

I like it. Cheap, quality talent looking to step up in his last few years of ball and make a run at a SB.

What about Diggs in Minny? He is not happy River. Is it too much of a fantasy to get him for 5-7 mill?

Yes, it is:
Rapoport added that the Vikings are "adamant" Diggs is not available for trade unless they are blown away by an offer. Diggs is in the midst of the first year of a five-year, $72 million extension he signed with the Vikes last year, per Spotrac.https://bleacherreport.com/articles/285 ... ade-rumors

Only $5.5M is guaranteed, and if the other $1.5M is tied to incentives rather than roster bonuses, I'll be happy. I also think $7M is a bit steep, but not so much that I'm disturbed by it. We saw how much RW loves his TE security blanket, and Olsen is one of the best blocking, security blanket TEs out there. I just hope they rotate TEs to keep them fresh and less likely to get hurt.

I'm not into letting players, even star players like Russell, call the shots when it comes to personnel. But in this case, the signing of Olsen has a dual benefit as it addresses a need and it keeps our franchise quarterback happy as Russell pushed publicly for this deal, so overpaying him by one or two million is worth it.
It's refreshing to hear your comments about Olsen's blocking ability. I haven't been able to get a read on that aspect of his game.

I have to admit it's just from watching his games against us, but that's a decent sample size over the years. I just remember several times wishing that the Hawks had Olsen, first because he seemed like the only receiver that routinely came through in the clutch against us, but I also remember several times on Panther runs commenting that I wished the Hawks' TE could seal the edge as well as he could. Whether that's a routinely great part of his game or I just remembered a few standout plays, I can't be certain. I am certain, though, that he's better than Hollister or Willson.

I hear all of your points and have really liked the guy. I know it’s early, yet I’m way more anxious about the D.

Damn, 12 million for a WR?? No way! I must be really behind the times on these salaries.

Hopefully we expend our 1st rounder for an OT or a DT HS.

Actually it's over $14M, but I'm glad you said it. And if you think that's a lot, go check out the 'Seahawk Free Agents' thread and see what Ifedi is likely to get.

OBI, 12 million for a WR is nothing. Tyler Lockette's average salary is 10.5 mil and that's 20th in the league. Elite Recievers are now getting 18-20 mil/year. It's crazy but that's the going rate!

It's an interesting signing. They obviously think he has some quality play left in him, but
I doubt it means the TE position is a lower value in the draft. Getting a good young TE
who can learn from him could be a real benefit.

I wonder if they are considering signing another FA TE.
Austin Hooper from the Falcons is being left to test FA, and he's only 25 so he might
be a long term addition with Olsen a shorter term TE. That would leave us with
Hooper, Olsen, and Dissly which would be an upgrade to what we had last year.

Don't forget about Hollister, although I fully expect us to put a tender on him.

I forgot about Hollister, but I also wonder if he's a legitimate starter and doesn't seem to have
the bulk to block like the others on the team. Maybe he could be used as an H-Back or something.

He's not a legitimate starter. As you noted, he is not a good inline blocker, a necessity in our run first offense. But he is a good 3rd down receiving tight end.
My hope is that they'll slap a 2nd round tender on him. He put up some pretty good receiving numbers so maybe someone will give us a draft pick for him.

So River, In Your opinion who is the better TE, Dissley or Hollister? I would say Hollister, but neither are all world, or as good as G. Olsen was in his prime.

Personally, because of his injuries, I don't know if we have enough playing time data on Dissley to be able to say what his potential is. From what little we do have, he has been fairly productive as a receiver but I'm not prepared to comment on his blocking. But blocking was supposed to be his forte'.

Dissly has played something like 11 games over 2 years. I think we can get an idea of his abilities and I think he's a good blocker
who has surprisingly (to me) soft hands. His route running isn't bad and he seems to be able to find seams in zones, so I think
he is the better overall TE if you are looking for a traditional TE like our Offense needs.

There's no question in my mind that Dissley is an all around better tight end. He was drafted primarily for his ability as a blocker yet turned into a very good receiver. Hollister did an admirable job filling in but he's one dimensional, more of a receiving tight end. Dissley blocks like a tackle.
I like the idea of slapping a 2nd round tender on Hollister. If no one bites, then we bring him back for depth.

Who is the better TE?? Dissly and it's not really close, especially in our offense. Although Hollister's 40 is faster (4.64 vs. 4.86) their 10 and 20 yard splits are very similar (20 yard split: Hollister: 2.70 Dissly: 2.73). Also, there agility tests were very similar with Hollister's being slightly better. The major difference between the two is weight (they are the same height). Dissly comes in at 262 while Hollister is only 239. Dissly is by far a superior blocker, especially when lining up on the LOS. Hollister is more of an H-back, not a great in-line blocker. He needs to get leverage with his angles and things like that to be effective blocking. They both have good hands and are effective as receivers, but Dissly has more potential in our offense because he is such a good blocker. Now if Dissly can't stay healthy (which he hasn't yet in the NFL) then it's a moot point. IMO, we will tender Hollister and retain him and (as long as there are no injuries) our TE's on opening day next year will be Olson, Dissly, and Hollister.

He's not a starter on a fully healthy roster. He's not a very good inline blocker. I doubt that we see him back in 2020.

Olsen will give us some value. I just watched a few videos of his highlights. Excellent hands, adept at finding soft spots in zone coverage. Downside is he has no speed and is tackled easier than Jimmy Graham, moreso in 2019. Everyone says he is a good blocker but I didn't really see that. Just average to my untrained eye. However, I didn't see a ton of him blocking. Biggest takeaway from those vids was Cam Newton's horrible, funky mechanics.
