Pro Bowl

I'm breaking tradition by watching this pseudo football game. I haven't watched it at all for a number of years and I guess I forgot how bad it really was.

This thing is a joke. It's not even a decent intra squad scrimmage. Players aren't putting out half an effort. There is no true tackling or blocking. It's almost as if they're playing touch football. And I can't say as I blame the players. Why risk injury to yourself or others in a completely meaningless game? Their season's over and everyone is thinking about the vacation they'll be taking with their wife's and girl friends.

All star games in other sports, like baseball and basketball, offer some genuine competition and demonstration of skills, but not this POS. It would be more entertaining if they had some type of off beat competition, like a tug-of-war or an obstacle course, maybe even a golf game.

The Pro Bowl needs to be abolished and figure out some other way to honor the sport's top players.

I agree it’s bad, and I don’t know if you’ve watched the NBA game recently but it is a joke too. They do have a skills comp on Thursday that is mildly entertaining...

I haven't watched an NBA game in its entirety since Michael Jordan won his last championship for the Bulls. But as I recall, their all star game wasn't anywhere near as throttled back of an effort as what occurs in the Pro Bowl.

I realize that no all star game is going to feature genuine competition on the same level and intensity as the regular season. But the Pro Bowl in particular is so obviously lame that I don't know why anyone would pay good money to see it.

I didn't watch the skills competition, but I have a feeling that there wasn't a lot of events that featured offensive linemen.

That was a long time ago!!! Now the NBA All-Star Games regularly end 147-138 (or something like that where the winning team is in the 140's and the loser is within 10-15). It's bad and there is absolutely no defense. I can't sit through a full All-Star game its just garbage. As to the offensive lineman you are right there aren't a lot of events that feature OL... I think there were 5 events and 2 featured OL/DL and those were a relay obstacle course and dodgeball. There were some interesting events though, at least events that I thought were interesting. I wouldn't say it's must see TV by any stretch and I won't be adjusting my schedule to watch it next year but if it's on and I don't have anything else to do I'll watch it. The Pro-Bowl on the other hand I won't watch unless I happen to turn it on and RW is playing QB or something.

Actually I looked up the NBA All-Star Game scores and it looks like the scores are more like in the 170-190 range!! No Defense!!

The NBA just doesn't appeal to me anymore. I'll watch college basketball, with March Madness being one of my favorite sporting events outside of football, but the pros just don't do anything for me. They lost me permanently when Clay Bennett and David Stern conspired to hijack the Sonics to Oklahoma.

I appreciate your insight into the NFL skills competition, but I doubt that I'll make a point to watch it. I'm not all that emotionally attached to individual athletes, movie stars, rock stars, et al to where watching them participate in some sort of random demonstration would be something I'd plan my day to accommodate. My main point was doing something to honor them besides this hideous exercise known as the Pro Bowl.

Couple of interesting articles out there about how Pete and his staff used the Pro Bowl experience as a glimpse into the life as a Seahawk. I really didn't think of it like this before when he got named to coach the Pro Bowl, but it makes total sense to take advantage of the opportunity to showcase yourself for potential free agents. Sounds like Pete did a great job of accomplishing that.

I saw that, and like you, I initially didn't think that much about it With as much money as we have to spend in free agency, hopefully it will pay some dividends. If there's anything Pete's good at, it's talking up an athlete.

It might be the tie breaker in a decision of a player with 2 similar offers.
Do you want to have fun at work and still win or do you want to view it as just another job?
I think it can only help in recruiting FA's - and they will go back to their teams and talk about
it to the other players who may be FA's next year.
