Pass interference

Postby Hawktawk » Mon Oct 21, 2019 12:11 pm

It seems like with this new joke of a rule reviewing PI that less call are being made. There were 2 instances including the one PC challenged that looked to be interference . Post game Carroll said” their hands were all over us but I’m learning” insinuating he’s unlikely to challenge it again. Officiating is the worst I can remember in general but it seems like they have completely lost control of PI.

They need to get off it HT, it was a mistake to put in the rule; they need to put an Umbrella review for all calls in the last 2 minutes. The Coaches need to quit wasting TO's for these plays.

IMO the rule was ill advised. They took a really horrible call at a critical moment in a championship game and tried to correct it administratively. All they had to do is get someone with radio contact with the crew chief to tell them to conference amongst themselves and consider picking up the flag. With 6 officials on the field, there's a pretty good chance that one of them would have seen such a flagrant omission, if not the guys in the replay center most certainly would have seen it. It doesn't have to require a long game stoppage or a coaching challenge to get the call right, at least those at a critical juncture as was the case in the Saints-Rams playoff game.

You could almost predict that the refs reaction was going to be to go with the call on the field unless there was an extremely flagrant situation. Coaches are now using it as a roll of the dice to see if they can't get back in the game by getting a challenge to go their way. It's an extremely subjective penalty. And why stop with pass interference? The colleges review possible targeting penalties. What makes PI that much different from a holding penalty or roughing the passer?
