Add another QB to the RW backup battle

Hawks sign former Ohio State QB JT Barrett:

Geno Smith didn't play well Thursday and will now miss a few weeks as they have to remove a cyst from his knee. Paxton did play well and probably earned himself a roster spot as this signing is more than likely insurance rather than actual competition for the backup position.

Agree, this is probably just a TC arm and not a serious look.

Wasn't Barrett the one caught selling his jersey and stuff on the market for cash when at Ohio state?

That was Terrelle Pryor, and it happened over 8 years ago.

Wow, I guess time flies by as you get older. Seems like just a couple years ago.

Geno Smith was back on the practice field yesterday, but it's unclear whether or not he'll play tomorrow night:

While Smith is back to full practice, coach Pete Carroll is still uncertain whether or not Smith will be available to face the Vikings Sunday night in Minnesota.

"I don't know," Carroll said after Friday's session. "Geno did get back on the practice field today. This is a remarkable recovery already, just to get back on the field today. We'll see. We are going to do one day at a time, see where he is."

Don't you just love how every recovery no matter how minor the surgery is "remarkable" or "amazing"?

Maybe Paxton Lynch has now "got it" in terms of understanding how to play at the NFL level and Geno sees the job
will not be given to him by default. A little competition brings about some urgency in most people.
It will be interesting to see how Lynch does against the Vikings on Sunday.

The clock has to be running out on Geno. Tomorrow is his best opportunity to redeem himself and get back into the mix. If he can't play, he won't see a lot of action in Game 3 as Russell will be getting a considerable amount of work and Smith would have to split what's left with Lynch and Barrett. The decision could be made before Game 4.

One of the qualifiers on Lynch's performance last week is that it was against his former team and that he might have taken advantage of knowledge that Geno wasn't privy to. That obviously won't be the case tomorrow.

We don’t have a Cap problem.

Paxton showing why he was dumped from Denver tonight... Gives Geno a chance to come off the deck from week 1. Lets just hope whomever 'wins' doesn't see the field.

Russell looks in mid-season form and 'Wilson to Lockett" will be the new norm this year.

I haven't seen the 4th quarter yet, but from what I saw of Lynch, he didn't play nearly as well as he did vs. the Broncos, so yea, he took a step back.

Russell looked good, although he did miss on a couple of throws. The thing that stood out for me is that he really seems eager to play, keeping the ball on a read option and taking off a couple of times when his receivers were covered. Lockett should thrive in Baldwin's place as the slot receiver.

That hit on Paxton was so disturbing to watch. It looked like he was going to be beheaded. I agree with Zimmer though that the QB is fair game if he does that, just can't lead with the head. I hope to never see another hit like that again.
