Pete.DK Metcalf go shirtless

Postby RiverDog » Sun Apr 28, 2019 6:30 am

It would have been funnier if someone like Mike Holmgren would have taken his shirt off in an interview...

Pete should have done the Most Muscular pose and growled "Now let's talk contract!"
It does show a little bit why younger players like Pete even though he's 2 or 3 generations older.

It reminds me of that scene in Jaws when Quint chugs a beer then crushes the can with one hand and young Hooper stares back at him and crushes his styrofoam cup.

It seemed a little self grangerizing for a player to do something like that to a bunch of old men he'd never met not to mention a player that hadn't even been drafted at that time.

Pete's in good shape for his age. Most guys his age look far, far worse.

Boy, you can say that again. I don't even like baring my chest to my wife.

Nevertheless, the specter of ANY 67 year old man baring his chest in response to a shirtless 22 year old professional athlete is little like Popeye vs. Pee Wee Herman.

I heard it wasn't his idea, but he was cajoled into removing his shirt by someone who thought it was either funny or a good idea.
Maybe that means he's coachable and I sure hope it wasn't his agent who thought it up.

You could look at that two ways: If he's that easy to cajole into something as outrageous as going shirtless in front of an NFL head coach that you've never met, how easy would it be to talk him into doing something really stupid?

It was a Seahawks scout that told DK to go shirtless.

Ah. Someone who knows Pete and John and knew it wouldn't be taken the wrong way.

Thanks for the info.

OK, that makes more sense. At least it was someone from the organization and not some random guy. It still strikes me as being a bit of a show off.

I think in his first press call they asked him what his body fat count was so it was on the mind of a lot of folks. I thnk I heard it was like 2%. Good gracious!!! If I had 2% body fat, I'd be naked as a j-bird as much as possible. (It pays to advertise... :D )

To get to 2%, I'd lose 40% of my body weight and most of that would be from between my ears.

On another note, I doubt it's 2% as I heard a doctor say that at 2% he would die.
But it's ridiculously low in any case.

Actually it supposedly measured 1.6 at the combine and when asked he attributed it to the rigors of going so hard preparing for the combine.

There's a doctor (a young one, I guess trying to make a name for himself) on youtube saying it's not healthy to sustain that low a body fat percentage or even any single digit percentage. I reckon he's right for 99% of the human race ... but I know that the Utah Jazz medical staff recorded Karl Malone's body fat in that rang (<2%) and it didn't raise any red flags from them. This YT doc says you can't maintain your energy for a full game, let alone a season with that low a body fat but Malone ran up and down the court all night long 82 games a year (plus the playoff virtually every year) and never suffered any ill effects from it.

There are always exceptions.

I too would be worried about sustaining a level of play or running out of energy but as Bob points out, Malone did it and there are physical phenoms out there. The only way I could get to 2% at my age would be to take massive amounts of Roids and have a plastic surgeon with a scalpal go after me. Then, maybe but highly unlikely. (I Hope he is not doping though).

I think there could be quite a discussion about it as from what I've seen the last few minutes seem
to suggest even Body Builders only go sub 5% for a short time then go back up. Here's an article
about DK specifically and the concerns with sub 5% body fat.

https://ftw.usatoday.com/2019/03/dk-met ... percentage

There are also a number of different ways to measure, so maybe that't the issue.

That's not 2% bodyfat. More likely 5 or 6%. Bodybuilders get to 4 to 6% using drugs for competitions. That is unsustainable for an extended period of times. Dorian Yates used to talk about getting to 4 to 6% bodyfat and he said his feet would hurt because the fat on his feet was gone and he was walking on skin and bone. It's not pleasant. This guy at 2% would be nearly impossible. He would already be eating his own body for nutrition. The guy looks 5 to 6%, upwards of 8%. Anyone maintaining muscle at 2% is using some kind of drug. I doubt Karl Malone ever measured that low. People always underestimate their body fat. Even nowadays body fat testing isn't super accurate with several advanced technologies for doing so.

That being said it's irrelevant. He's in amazing shape.
