Ok, its time to get my early draft rant fix! Why don't we do something novel, Trade UP! Take Joey Boza, who is the best pass rusher to come out in 4 years? How about the big dude from Alabama? Naw, its the Hawks, we have to trade down and get Germain Ifedi! What was I thinking!!

We only have 4 picks, so you want to end up with making maybe 2 in the entire draft?
That would be pretty tough to swallow.

Next year we expect to have 11 picks so it would be a better year.

How does management of a so-called pro team let all their picks slip away?

Why is Oakland and SF always loaded with pics and Seahawks have none and then squander what you do have or they dont show up when the season starts or they play a season or too get good and get traded/

Lots of questions I am surprised the managers have not been purged

As was noted, we don't have the draft capital to trade up, especially into the top 3 where Bosa is likely to fall.

In hindsight, you can criticize some of our moves that involved high draft picks (I was especially critical of the Percy Harvin trade), but at the time, we featured ourselves as a team that was one or two players away from a Lombardi, so trading picks for players made sense.

Riv, I hate like hell defending Dambo, but how did we lose that many Picks, and please tell me it doesnt go back to Percy Harvin.

Probably our trades for Brown, Sheldon Richardson and that bad backup qb. Don’t worry about it - we will likely end up with at least 10 picks as per the norm.

Question is, does Clark stay or go? I’m thinking there will be some serious headscratching once again.

Obi, don’t defend a blathering idiot- it never looks good. As to where are draft picks went- our 2nd round pick we used to acquire Duane Brown (he’s been pretty good for us); our #6 we used to acquire Brent Hundley (he’s no longer on the team, but was our backup last year); and our 7th rounder we used on Shalom Luani (still on the roster plays special teams and is our current backup SS- played in 13 games last year). So if you look at that the picks they don’t have don’t look that bad... Duane Brown has played well at LT (you could argue they gave up too much, but he certainly has been solid). Hundley didn’t help us but I don’t mind them using a 6th rounder on a backup QB who they wanted to look at as a possible guy they could develop, and losing a 7th to a guy who played in 13 games and is still on the roster isn’t bad.

I typically don’t like trading draft picks for players (except on draft day as you can get a steal after a team drafts somebody to replace somebody else) as it hasn’t worked out well for the Hawks, but what we already have from the 19’ draft (a very good LT and a 7th round pick that played 13 games) isn’t bad really.

I think we trade him, but I was pretty sure we were going to trade ET last year so take that for what it’s worth

We already did, but yes he was a waste of a 2nd round pick!

Have to agree with River on this one wholeheartedly. I laughed pretty hard when I saw the question as to why those teams have so many picks every year. The obvious answer, suck on the field and you too can be a star at draft time.

Mykc did a pretty good job of describing our trading of draft choices. We didn't "lose" those picks, we spent them on players, most of whom we never would have been able to acquire in a draft. And don't forget, draft picks are every bit if not more of a crap shoot than bringing guys like Richardson.

Like I said, we've been a team that's been at least perceived as a team a player or two away from another Super Bowl, so to steal a phrase from George Allen, "the future is now." I never liked the Harvin trade, but not because we had to give up our #1. I didn't like it because of the player. If Harvin had the balls to read the riot act to his head coach Leslie Frazier on the sidelines in the middle of a game, I felt it was a precursor of some really bad things to come. But Harvin was unquestionably MVP type talent with a high ceiling, and had it worked out, we could have gone to 3 or 4 straight SB's. Had it not been for that specific personality, I would have been all for a trade like that.

You're upset because draft day is when our chickens come home to roost. It's like seeing the credit card bill at the end of the month. You forget about the fact that you'd had a great time spending that money.

I agree with many that I didn't like the way the Harvin trade worked out. I also have to acknowledge that his return TD in the SB broke the will of the Broncos. "IF" a few plays didn't go the way they did in the 3rd qtr, it could have been a whole different story. So I'm thankful that he was here and made the entire second half of that game a pleasure to watch.

It seems that JS has gone back to his ways prior to 2014 when he really valued compensatory
picks as we didn't dip into FA at all and now should get 11 selections next year. If that's the case,
it should help the Cap room as we will be filling positions with low cost draft picks. The hard part
is identifying very good players in lower rounds.

The back breaker in that game came just before the end of the half. We had shut down the Broncos all game and they were just getting within scoring range when Cliff Avril got home and got a hit on Manning, causing the ball to flutter into Malcom Smith's hands, who returned it for a pick 6. That made the score 22-0 and lowered the Broncos winning percentage to less than 5%.

In retrospect, that game was so dominant that the absence of any single player on our roster wouldn't have done much more than make the game a little closer. With the one excepting being Green Bay in our opener the following season, Harvin was never the 'difference maker' in any game he played in for us and damn near blew up the locker room.

No one will ever convince me that there was a single 'good' thing that resulted from the Harvin trade. Considering what we paid to get him, he was the biggest player trade bust in our history.

No, not one single thing - I agree with that. But you have to admit that confidence is a big factor in swinging a game. Had they stopped us on that first drive and engineered a TD on theirs, they'd only be 2 scores down at that point with a sway in momentum. As it turned out, that Harvin return sunk their shoulders and killed their spirit from there on.
