Seahawks want 1st-rounder for DE Clark

This just in from the No Sh*t Department...

Seahawks want 1st-rounder for DE Clark:

Any team that thinks he isn't worth a 1st-rounder hasn't been watching.

That said, I hope we keep him. I'd like at least another year at the FT price until we have his replacement groomed.

They might consider an early 2nd rounder I would suspect.
I think they might be having some difficulty paying Frank
as much or more than the Cowboys shelled out for their
DE. As well, there is a lot of DE talent in this Draft so the offers
might not be as good as in previous years.

Clark hasn't signed his tender yet, and word is that he'll be holding out at least during training camp, which is why the Hawks are looking at trade options. He's one of the top edge rushers in the league, and those folks come at a premium, so I'd be disappointed if all we got for Clark was a 1st rounder, unless it was in the top 10.

I'd love to hold onto him as he's at the peak of his career, but now that Russell's contract has been decided, it would be incredibly stupid to tie up 25-30% of the cap in two players.

Interesting RD, I thought JS just said Clark hadn't indicated he was holding out into training camp. On the trade, I'll bet whatever we do we swap our first along with Clark... if we find someone in the top ten. And it wouldn't surprise me if we then traded down on draft night, too.

I was repeating what I heard from my 'source', who said that Clark was as good as gone, but like you, I did see JS's comments, so we'll see.

It wouldn't make a lick of sense for Clark to hold out. It would be a lose-lose situation just like it was with Earl and Kam. The best thing he can do for himself and the team would be to sign the tender and get on with business.

2 major problems to overcome. Russells cap hit and lack of draft picks. If a decent deal comes through for Clark he be gone. Make it easier to deal with the QB cap hit and supplies extra draft capital to find his replacement on the cheap. The rookie would have to figure it out on his own without Clark's help. Its a gamble, but what are the chances the Hawks can handle 2 players absorbing 30% or more of the cap? Maybe for one year on the FT, but after that he walks for nada because the Hawks can't afford the 2nd FT tag or pay him the rate an edge rusher of his ability commands. There is Russells cap hit and the rest ..There's only The Haves and Have Nots. Going to have to fill the rest of the big money positions with hungry Have-Nots. Straight from the No Sh*t department of the Vatican.

This site says we want a 1st and 2nd round pick for Clark.
If true, are we setting ourselves up for another ET situation
whereby we end up losing him for a comp pick?

The Hawks are holding all the trump cards, at least this season. They don't have to start paying on Russell's new contract until 2020 and if Clark doesn't sign or we don't trade him, we can always let him play under the tag and we do the dance again next season.

The only leverage Clark has is that he could essentially negate a trade by telling the offering team that he won't sign with them or will demand a price they won't pay. He could hold out, but that's really a dumb move and would be like cutting your nose off to spite your face. If Clark doesn't sign a long term deal with some team this season, he runs the risk of a career threatening injury taking him out of an opportunity for a huge payday.

The most likely team for a trade would be the Colts. There is a personal connection between Clark and the Colts. Ed Dodds, the Colts assistant GM, was a senior personnel exec on the Seahawks staff up until 2017 and apparently knows Clark pretty well, and they have 9 draft picks, including 2-2nd rounders, one of them being the #34 overall from the Jets, and two 4th rounders. With that 2nd rounder from the Jets, the Colts are currently sitting at #26 and #34. If they have a particular player they're targeting in that range, giving up one of those picks isn't likely to hurt their chances of getting the guy they want...so a high 2nd rounder and a 4th rounder for Clark?

I could see taking both 2nd rounders for Clark but not a 2nd and 4th. That said, I know very little about being a GM let alone knowing anything close to what JS knows.

At 34 the talent level may just be as good as late 1st, so that might work out.
It wouldn't surprise me if we traded down twice into the 2nd round even if we
trade Clark to the Colts for 2 early picks.

You can almost consider a #34 overall a first round pick. The reason I threw out a 4th rounder is that the Colts are sitting on the #129 and #134 in the 4th, and teams don't like big gaps on their board in the event a player they or another team is desperate for starts to drop.

If the Colts gave up their two 2nd rounders, they'd have a gap between the #26 overall in the first and the #89 overall in the 3rd. That's another big gap that teams would rather avoid. From our own perspective, we don't have a 2nd rounder, so that's a big gap between #21 and #84 that could be filled.

Kansas City, the only other team being mentioned, has a low first (#29) and two low, tightly bunched 2nd's (#61 and #63). If KC traded a #1 and #2, they wouldn't have a single pick in the draft until #61 at the earliest. The Chiefs also have just one low 3rd rounder and no 4th round pick.

If it's true that there's only two bidders for Clark, we're not likely to be offered the huge bonanza for Clark that some are expecting. A high 2nd and a 4th for Clark is probably the low end of what we'd take for Clark, but it would relieve us of another financial headache. Don't forget, we have Bobby to pay next season, and we're not going to be able to tie up 40% of the cap between 3 players.

You have to factor in that Clark would be the equivalent of their highest draft pick,
so they would be giving up one less than what it appears. As well, there is no
guessing that Clark can make a difference in the NFL as opposed to draft picks.
He does come with a Cap hit, though.

Well, it's not a slam dunk certainty that Clark will continue his meteoric rise with the Colts, but I get your point.

One of the reasons why I think that we're not going to get a first rounder for Clark and that we'll be dealing with the Colts is that there are reportedly just two teams bidding for him and the other one is the Chiefs, with quite a bit less draft capital available.

My guess is that we don't trade Clark, we don't come to terms with him on a new contract, and that he signs the tender before training camp.

If I'm GM I don't even consider less than a first for Clark. Even if it's a high second they'd have to sweeten it up to first round value to even get me to answer the phone.

Yea, I was just throwing out the 2nd/4th from the Colts and not necessarily advocating it. But I was betting that if we did pull the trigger on a trade, that it would be with the Colts.

Turns out that I wasn't all that far off anyway. The Chiefs gave us the #29 overall, and the Colt's 2nd rounder was #34. But the 2nd rounder is a lot better than the 4th that I was suggesting.
