Just had a Joe Theismann injury, ugly. I've always been a big fan of him personally as well as professionally, I wish him the best.

Cam Newton and Marcus Mariota, too. Bad day for QB's so far.

Newtons' back in and just threw a TD, not sure about Marcus but Smith's injury looked career ending.

Been out doing yardwork - was it a compound fracture like Joe's?

Assume you know by now, but yeah, every bit as gruesome as Theismans. I'm not sure if that's a "career ending" injury any longer, but it sure could end it mentally, even if physically he could come back at 100%. Be difficult to get that out of your head, especially for a QB, who is the number one target of every defense.
So weird that it was 33 yrs to the day after Theisman , who happened to be in attendance, and had to leave the stadium afterwards or at least that's what I've read. I certainly haven't fact checked it.

Yeah, that's why I called it a Joe Theismann injury ... tibia and fibula both broke completely, lower half of his calf and foot flopping around at unnatural angles ... as ugly as any I've ever seen. Went straight from the stadium to surgery.

Damn. I wish him a full recovery. He's a good guy. Always carried himself well in all circumstances.

Wasn't Lockett's injury similar to what Smith just experienced? I know it used to be considered career ending back in the days when Theisman and Tim Krumrie suffered them, but it seems to me that improvements in surgery and rehab have improved their chances of recovery.

Actually yes, it was just like Lockett's injury. Smith is 10 years older than Lockett was though, but it's still possible I guess. It'd be a long hard road back, 34 isn't really that old for QBs now days, so I guess we'll see. Alex always was a fighter.

Similar but I don't think it broke through the skin for Lockett like Theisman and Smith. Psychologically when the bone comes out of your body and you're sitting there looking at the bare bone with the blood, etc. it has a more severe effect on your mental state for coming back.
I think what will end Smith's career much like Theisman isn't necessarily the injury itself but rather their age when it happened and the amount of time to come back from it physically and more importantly mentally. It took Lockett 2 years. How old will Smith be in 2 Years? Plus, since it was a compound fracture (sticking through the skin) it will take longer for him to have the confidence to stand in there and deliver the ball. No team is going to let him "play through" the imaginary sacks that he will be seeing at every snap.

I'm pretty sure Lockett's did break through skin. Russell Wilson said that when he got to him a few moments after he went down that his foot was covered in blood.

Hard to say. You're right about injuries getting into people's heads. Late in his career and after multiple knee surgeries, Joe Namath used to go down instantly when he got the slightest pressure. But Smith could be different. He might be able to put it out of his mind entirely.
I can remember a compound fracture occuring in a college basketball team a few years ago, and there were players on the bench that got phyiscally sick from witnessing it.

His injury is eerily similar to Theisman's.
Here is a comment from Theisman about it:
Both happened on Nov. 18. Both happened at the 40-yard line. Romeo Crennel was an assistant coach on the opposing sideline of both games. Washington won the 1985 game 23-21; Houston won Sunday’s game 23-21. Theismann finished his season with 301 attempts; Smith entered Sunday’s game with 301 attempts and finished his season with 328.
“This date has always been a day in my life that I’ll never forget,” Theismann said. “. . .My immediate thought was that my heart went out to him. I feel so bad for him. I know the road ahead. We’re somewhat similar in age [when the injuries happened]. He’s not 25 or 26 years of age. I was 35; he’s 34. How long will it take to come back? What is the severity?

Wow, that is a strange coincidence, enough to make a person superstitious.

There's more similarities than that.... both had an NFL mvp defensive player involved in the tackle, the only two defensive players to receive the award ( Taylor and Watt)... etc... there's a long, long list... just incredibly bizarre and unfortunate.
