Team Game Plans

This thread is inspired off of River's post on his game plans but this one is around the team.

So now we've seen a whole game with the starters. What did you see in regards to game planning from our new Coordinators. Any differences?

What I noticed was:

Defense:
In the preseason Norton had blitz packages that he used but I didn't see many or at least I don't recall any blitzes to put pressure on their QB.

Offense:
I really thought we were going to put more emphasis on the run. I wasn't impressed with any of the holes created by the oline at all.

I thought our oline would be better at creating a pocket but it was like the front 3 were sieves and ... well, Ifedi was Ifedi.

I saw us try a screen pass or two in the first half but by the second half, RW had resulted back to deeper throws instead of taking what is given to us by their D. Other teams do this to us all the time with the dink and dunks but we don't seem able to learn that part of the game.

Any other thoughts?

I noticed the lack of blitz packages, too, but when you give up nearly 150 yards rushing and 8 rushing first downs, it tends to put those plans on hold. Denver ran the ball 45% of the time.

I'm wondering why we didn't keep a tight end in more than we did to help block their edge rushers. Everyone on the planet knows how inadequete of a pass blocker that Ifedi is. I also noticed zero read options and very few RPO's. Not sure why they gave up on Carson, he was clearly running the ball much better than Penny. I understand that they want to get Penny some touches, but Carson at this point is the far superior ball carrier.

I'd like to see Penny returning kicks and punts instead of Lockett, too.

At least one or the other, preferrably punts. With the rule changes on kickoffs, Lockett should get more opportunities to break one.

he should but here's why I'd rather see Penny doing both of them.

1. Lockett seems to hesitate or he just doesn't seem as fast in the kick returns and I don't think he could withstand a pounding on a punt return since he's much lighter than Penny.
2. I think we are going to need Lockett more than Penny and I'd like to have Lockett fresh for the offense. Penny can sit on first and/or second down to rest from a kick return.

They need to clean up that run defense or other teams will dictate to us keeping blitzing and pass rush off the table. If you can't stop the run in the NFL, you will be a bottom feeder on defense.

I rewatched the game today in slow motion and saw that they really picked on our rookie LBs for most of those yards. We really need KJ to get healthy. We also need a better rotation with the DTs since they looked gassed at the end of the game. Either that or find someone else to put inactive for the games.

Maybe they were more gassed because it was Mile High - we'll see next week.
