Navorro Bowman's Contract is Not Good

Postby jshawaii22 » Thu Aug 04, 2016 2:48 am

I can only imagine what MR. Bennett is thinking right now. Most NFL teams follow a very specific "no negotiations" until within one year of the end of the contract.
Now, the not so bright management in Santa Clara has extended their prize D - Man with not 1, not 2 but THREE years left on his contract.

Not over-the-top with new money, but this is the type of thing that could change Michael's outlook for the coming year. I heard we were going to meet his agent last week. Nothing happen?

I haven't heard anything new, but Michael knew when he signed what the team's policy was re: the next negotiation. If he wanted an organization that will tear up a 4-year contract one year in, he could have gone to play for the 49ers (or whoever).

However, I think he makes a compelling argument that he's kinda-sorta changed positions- he's doing more for us now than he was when he signed (I think- can't remember exactly when he evolved to be the multi-threat he is now), and I think *that* is where the team can find wiggle room on their rule and hopefully get something done to keep him happy without knee-capping the team financially (now or in the future).

I'm not for holding a hard line, either, at least not with Michael Bennett. Outside of JJ Watt, there aren't many players that can do the things he does.

There actually is a precedent, Lynch, no "new" money, but moving money from future incentives forward and guaranteeing them with a good faith promise to rework the contract this coming off season. ( coincidentally, Bennett dumped his former agent and signed on with Lynch's this past off- season).

not sure if it had anything to do with it, but Mr. Bennett was summarily dismissed from practice today, noticeably upset and taking it out on the OLine.

Marvelous. Let's hope it's nothing deep-seated.

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/1722 ... t-practice

Seems no big deal if tempers simply flare and Pete decides to do what a ref might (or whatever he said the initial explanation was), but the fact that he continued to stew and need to be restrained after being gifted a chance to cool down?

Get a grip, Michael.

Alpha males. No big deal.

Just a FYI, I saw the very first ever Seahawk training camp in 1976. You talk about fights and name calling! There were no set positions at all on an expansion team, so all 22 spots and the special teams were up for grabs.

That's what makes this a little odd (at least that he seemed to hold on to it long after it was over)- MB's position on this team is one of the most secure, and his dominance is about as far from questionable as anyone on the team not named Sherman, Thomas, or Wilson (and maybe even then).

Yeah yeah, I know it's training camp and flare ups happen- just seems a bit weird to read he still had to be restrained after sitting on the sideline for some amount of time. Maybe it was just that *he* was called out for "crossing a line" (or whatever PC said occurred) when others apparently weren't, and it miffed him?

Bennett's position may be secure, but there's no one on the OL that has a lock on a starting spot, at least not in the same sense that Bennett has on his. What better way to impress a coach than to take on the stalwart of the DL?

If there's another flare up between the same two or the same group of players or if the same thing were to happen in the regular season, then one might start to get concerned. But this is training camp, and they don't yet have a common enemy.

OK... I still think that MB looks at an OLineman and sees Schneider in his eyes, but after reading this, I'll accept it as a "football" minute and move on.

I liked reading that article, js. Ifedi not backing down from vets like Bennett and Rubin can only help him. Also really nice to read that Bennett is in Ifedi's ear about what it takes to make it in the NFL. Even if the scuffle is partially attributed to his contract situation, Bennett is showing himself to be a professional and a team player and a leader. The FO needs to find some way to throw him a bone.

The problem is, the 'fights' as they may be, were started by Bennett, not the Rookie. The Rookie just stood his ground. This was the 3rd fight in 4 practices, which is why Bennett was pulled.

I'm hoping he's frustrated by great play from the OL and maybe Ifedi in particular.

Meh.

Not worried about Bowman's deal playing much of a role, here. It'll be a competitive offer by our FO, for sure.

It's interesting timing since Bennett's entering his 8th season and will turn 30 this November. He's playing at his peak right now, but it wouldn't surprise me if we ended up not breaking the bank for a long term future with him.
