NFL just announce we will get 3 more compensatory picks. 3rd, 5th, and 6th. That's good news.

Yep, JS and PC love comp picks and we scored with them this year. Depending on what else we do in FA this year we may get some good picks again next year.

So we get a selection in each round now. That's good.
I think we can trade them now, can't we or is it next year that trading comp picks takes effect?
Edit: We should get 2 next year with Irvin and Sweezy, and maybe another if Okung goes. I think part of one of the strategies is to sign FA's later so as to minimize the impact on Comp picks.

Was the conditional draft pick for Norwood for next season?

2017 conditional 7th round pick (conditional if he was on Carolina's roster and appeared in games in 2015).
He played in 1 game for Carolina last year.

It's not only good news, it's exactly what allows us to keep the top tier players, allow 2nd and 3rd tier guys like Irvin, and Mebane to leave, and still expect to stay dominant. John and Pete's team building philosophy absolutely relies on comp picks to reload after all the losses, (much the same way teams like Baltimore, New England, Pittsburgh have been doing for years now).
IMO this is BY FAR the best way to run a team, FAR, FAR better than the way we did it before John and Pete. Fans just need to get used to seeing players they really like leave...it's the price for continued success.

The only way it works though is to get more than expected production our of 2nd and 3rd day draftees when it's time for their money contracts (otherwise they don't return comp picks). So while I agree, it still comes down to drafting well.

It does, but that's the risk of this strategy, there's always some kind of risk in any strategy where competition is involved.
Thankfully, the Seahawks have been the NFL's BEST at drafting in the third round and later, since Pete and John arrived. They've had most success in the later part of the draft than any team in the NFL, and it's really not even close. So yeah, it requires that we keep hitting home runs in the draft, but with these guys running the show, does anyone expect the home runs to stop? I sure don't.

That's true for almost any transaction involving draft picks. It really rewards a team for being good appraisers of college talent of which Pete and JS have excelled at. It's the gift that keeps giving.
Now, if they can just hit on a few of their veteran trades/FA signings, we'll have a franchise that will rival New England's in terms of staying power.
