Vikes request permission...

Vikes ask permission to interview Dan Quinn for HC job. 2 things:
1) Screw the Vikes
2) There should be a rule disallowing ANY such requests, or even mention of prospective candidates, that are still actively coaching another team. Because the Vikes sucked and their season over, why should our team, or any other play-off team, be penalized with such distraction?
I don't like it and it shouldn't be this way, IMO. I say, with apologies to Dan Quinn, we deny this and any other such request until OUR season has concluded.

It's better than the colleges, where coaches routinely accept other jobs before their last games in their current job.

I would allow this if they gave us back a third rounder and substituted Dan Quinn for Darrell Bevel.
You are right however, teams should have to wait until the season has concluded for these interviews to commence.

PC did say, he didn't mind the interview as long as it was this week in these days...certainly not next week.

Get used to it.
We're a top contending team for the SB, so naturally the coaching staff is gonna be seriously considered for vacant HC gigs elsewhere.
Even if Quinn leaves, we'll be fine.

I think that all goes without saying, Zorn. My point being that such activity should be delayed until after a candidate's team is eliminated from play.

Even if there was a rule against it teams would still be contacting coaches via less official means. The fact is the process happens quickly and if you want to be considered you need to be available. Pete's willingness to let guys interview guarantees that he gets a good shot at the best possible replacements. He handles it the right way.

I dislike this even more, but slightly understandable due to the (ridiculously) extended bowl season. I don't recall such activity being as prevalent yesteryear, as it is today. Many of the kids are only in this for the bowl. Without pay and sometimes even scholarship, it's their sole reward for their efforts / dedication. And what do they get....a coach that's never head-coached before coaching them in the most important game of their lives? Very unfair, thinks me.
While on that subject, even though not comparably optimum for viewing / advertising compared to the holiday season, I don't see how the current format of forcing (some) teams to wait an entire month to play is good for anyone other than the networks. These kids have lives they need to get on with, whether football related or not. Just my opinion. Love college football...the NCAA, not so much.

Understood, FC...but there are rules against player contact under similar conditions that are enforced with an iron fist. But even if there were
behind the scenes activity, that would be less distractive, IMO, than this current format.
OTOH, maybe it's not a distraction at all (?).

I'll play devil's advocate here. I'm a college professor (not at a D1 school, but I was for my 5 years of grad work), and many of these kids spend so much time on football during the semester that they really need some time off to catch up before final exams. Despite popular belief, there are some--admittedly too few--athletes who really are students and want to get something out of college other than a ticket to the NFL. Having time off gives them time to prepare for finals.
Now, this doesn't make the Jan 5th and 6th games make any sense. I'd just as soon have students finish by Jan 1 so that they can get a little time off before starting the next semester, but I don't mind having students wait until the winter break to play their bowl games.

Ahhhh, many years since I've been in school, Oly. I appreciate your excellent, eye opening observation on this subject. I actually do feel better, now.

There is interest in Bevell, Quinn & Cable.... As in they are all 3 interviewing this week, or so I thought. While I think it's a great compliment and I wish everyone well....I'd prefer they be a little more mono focussed. Maybe that's why we lost the Atlanta game last year.

Teams who need a new HC cast a wide net at this time of year so who knows what the real interest is.
The Lions are also reportedly interested in Jim Caldwell, the OC of the Ravens.

I hear ya.
Problem there is that unless a playoff team (position) coach is a "lock" for a HC vacancy, only a few would end up landing the gig, given the time constraints franchises place on themselves to fill the position.

Pete said that he is more than happy to help his people get better jobs with other clubs, as long as it doesn't distract them from their current duties. He said he "hoped" that if they were going to go to an interview it would be this week rather than next week. I assume Pete means next week after it is apparent who the Hawks are going to play.
Pete I think is being way too n ice of a guy to a fault here, I guess he has forgot that he let Bradley and Bevell travel to other cities last season right in the middle of preparing for Atlanta, we remember how that turned out, don't we.
Yeah, I would hate to see both Cable and Quinn go but it is not unexpected. But, as with Bradley who IMHO personally blew the play off game against Atlanta having the defense play a "soft zone" in the last 30 seconds I will be glad to see Darryl Bevell go. His play calling has been up and he doesn't seem to be willing to make adjustments. He is too stubborn to accept that what he game planned for isn't working. Quite frankly, I have been hoping Wilson would just start ignoring the plays Bevell sends in and just call his own plays.
What ever team hires Bevell as a head coach will end up regretting it, he is Josh McDaniels all over again.
Why am I not surprised that Minnesota is NOT one of the teams that want to interview Bevell, that says everything. Maybe with Bevell gone Pete and John will give up trying to relieve the Vikings of all of the players on offense they no longer want.
Mike Holmgren held on to players he should have let go and with Pete he seems too attached to his assistant coaches who arte not pulling their weight.

It doesn't surprise me that our coaches are in big demand...that comes from being a top-ranked team. We can lose Bevell, and still be good with the right hire. One I wouldn't want to lose is our cornerback coach, K. Richard..he evidently knows how to teach the position.

Its the nature of the game and it occurs to everyone. I can't stand the Vikings as of late. No valid reason either.

I hated them in 04 and 05 though. Bastard children some of them.
Anyway, its legit. And PC is happy with it. And yes don't come a calling until we win the Superbowl. In which case Bevell goes first I hope. (We kinda give him a little crap, but if he does leave, I think we will miss his play calling. Not his slowness on the offensive side to adjust, but play calling. Of course speaking for myself).

They didn't choose DQ.
All positions filled except Cleveland.
DQ goes to Cleveland?

Now that is worth re-quoting!
There are definitely times I wish Russell would pull a Favre and just completely ignore Bevell's plays. Favre had his best season as a pro, changing many (some in the local media suggested most) of the plays Bevell called.
I still remember the press trying to get Brad Childress to admit that Favre wasn't running any of the plays Bevell as calling, (it was SO obvious!) they pressured and pressured all three of Bevell, Childress and Favre until eventually they did more or less admit it was happening.
Which of course prompted story after story in the twin cities newspapers and non stop talk on the radio shows (which I get here in Fargo unfortunately).
The whole thing was nothing short of hilarity, (I love seeing the Vikings self destruct!)and an object lesson on dysfunction. What made it even funnier was, as long as Favre continued to just ignore Bevell, they kept winning though everyone knew it was just a matter of time until that came to and end, if they couldn't get on the same page.
But Bevell would not relent, he INSISTED on continuing to call the worlds most bland offense, and Favre continued to audible...it was like watching the Keystone cops.

Well, every HC job is filled but one Bevel and Quinn can concentrate fully on the job at hand, Frisco. I am sure that neither are happy that they lost HC opportunities because the team they currently work for is still in the play offs. Now, subconsciously at least neither Bevel or Quinn but Bevel especially will be tempted to sabotoge our team's offense in order to wrap up the season sooner rather than later. Like I said, subconsciously because I can't believe a coordinator would do it intentionally but I don't trust Bevel. I know that Pete has said that the conservative play calling is all on him but the actual play calling has been suspect since Bevel has been here. I will be glad when he is gone.
