I would imagine his most devastating sacks came off of situations in which he was holding the ball. I agree we were blown up on some running plays, but overall Carson looked pretty good. He averaged 5 ypc.
RiverDog wrote:Obi, sometimes I seriously wonder which game you were watching. The OL did not get "pushed around for 4 quarters". If what you are saying was true, Chris Carson would not have averaged 5 yards per carry. They obviously didn't dominate and there were times we had some breakdowns in protection, but they are not the unit that lost us the game, especially when you consider how out of balance our run/pass ratio was and how long Russell was taking to get rid of the ball.
Do you remember how we both used to harp on Ifedi being a penalty machine? Go back and count how many penalties our OL has drawn this season.

We are a pass first, quick strike offense that features the best deep ball quarterback in the league pitching to 6'4" WR that has top end speed. We don't need a top 10 defense to win. If we keep our opponents under 20 PPG, we should win 80% of our games.
Having said that, we did get out of balance Sunday. A pass first, quick strike offense doesn't necessarily mean throwing the ball on 3 out of 4 plays in a low scoring contest.

We're still a ball control offense. Pete put the handcuffs back on Russ because he started turning the ball over like he was a bank clerk getting robbed at gunpoint.
RiverDog wrote:Pete didn't have the cuffs on Russell last Sunday in a low scoring game where we pass the ball twice as often as we run it.

Aseahawkfan wrote:Then Russ just isn't very good at this point in the season because it sure didn't amount to much.
RiverDog wrote:He's playing below his capabilities, that's for sure. But I still think that our scheme was more to blame last Sunday than was Russell. (Oh, crap, I'm sounding more like Anthony all the time!)

I've watched this song and dance so many times with Russ that I expect it. Russ will get hot. We start throwing. He has some bad turnover games. Pete puts the clamps down. The offense stalls out. Same old story. Now we're suffering again because we don't have that top 10 defense Pete usually relies on to keep the points down.
mykc14 wrote:I do agree with this, but would also add that I think there are some scheme issues as well, but it's really hard to tell without watching the all-22 and knowing exactly what the play set-up is. I also agree with River in that based on the defense we were seeing Sunday we should have run the ball more and we are way too predictable with our tendencies. We run a little, have a quick rhythmic passing game when we are in our own territory and then we get to mid-field and BOOM play action pass, looking for a deep shot. Defenses have caught onto it and are expecting it, but it was especially damaging against the Giants due to how many yards we lost on those sacks, the intentional grounding, and DJ Dallas's -6 yard reception towards the end of the half. Our offense as soon as we got to mid-field was brutal...
