Coaching Hot Seat

Postby RiverDog » Tue Dec 14, 2021 8:01 am

This could be an even higher season than usual for head coaching turnover. Here's the list so far:

Raiders. As we know, Jon Gruden has already been fired and a permanent replacement has not been named.

Bears. Matt Nagy is a virtual goner.

Jags Urban Meyer. Nuf said.

Giants. Joe Judge, who tossed OC Jason Garrett under the bus earlier this year, is likely done.

Vikings. Mike Zimmer has been the HC since 2014, one of the longer tenured HC's in the league. It's playoffs or bust for him.

Texans. David Culley is in his first season, but the Texans have done a huge face plant. He could be one and done.

Broncos. Vic Fangio has been rumored as being on the hot seat for some time. Like Zimmer, it could be playoffs or bust.

Panthers. Matt Rhule is in his second season. The Panthers have lost 4 of 5 and like the Hawks, need a miracle to make the playoffs. Their owner that replaced Jerry Richardson is reportedly very anxious to win.

Cards. Although he's not on the "hot seat" as he's not getting fired, we need to keep an eye on Kliff Kingsbury, who has the Cards on the cusp of their best season in a decade. He's at the center of a storm of rumors that Oklahoma is making a run at him after their HC Lincoln Riley bolted the Sooners for USC. Kingsbury has not denied the rumors, saying only that he doesn't want to discuss it "right now".

That's 9 jobs that could possibly open up, and that's not counting our own possible opening. With that much possible competition for head coaching candidates, teams are going to be less likely to wait until Bloody Monday to dismiss their current HC's. As teams start falling out of playoff contention, look for heads to start to roll.

I dont think Nagy is a bad coach as much as hes stuck with a bad team. He will likely be fired. Khan has said hes waiting till the end of the season to evaluate, pointed out he had his past 2 coaches 4 years each. he pointed out Urban has won everywhere hes been and so its hard for him. Still you are probably right and he is not smart to keep him.. The guy with the Texans, really. Your star is out for groping masseuses' and you have a washed up Tyrod Taylor and a pure Rook second tier QB. I thought he had that Mills guy coached up pretty well especially early in the game. So I dont know about that guy. To me Matt Rhule is also a good coach with no talent. Zimmer is another guy that has had a pretty high ceiling for a few years but never got overr the hump ebenm though the QB is playing betterr than almost everyone in the league. Its a mystery.
As for our guy I am beginning to think how we finish may impact ownerships decision about one last roundup. We shall see.

Plus at the beginning of the season, Mike McCarthy was rumored as being on the hot seat. If the Cowpukes auger in and go one and done in the playoffs, I wouldn't be surprised to see Jeurrah move on from him.

I think Culley will be okay as it would be impossible to evaluate him fairly given the chaos surrounding Watson and the lurch it left the team in at the QB position.

The Kingsbury situation is the most intriguing to me. When coaches say things like "I don't want to discuss it now," or "I'm focused on winning the next game" when you know they are being courted by another organization I have concluded that is equivalent to "a big announcement is coming soon that I'm jumping ship." Half the time the rumors turn out to be true even when courted coaches say things like, "I know you've all heard the rumors that I'm going to . . ." but deny they have even been contacted by another organization. The intriguing thing about this one is that Kingsbury is unquestionably succeeding as a college coach who jumped to the pros.

What do you guys think about the possibility of Jason Garrette being tagged by some team for a head coaching position? I note that Duke passed on him for the HC vacancy there. He was at the helm in Dallas for 10 years and had success there early on. At one point he was considered to be one of the bright young minds in football.

Good point. He could end up in Chicago and tasked to coach up Justin Fields. The Bears have had some pretty miserable luck with their quarterbacks lately, which is why they were supposedly interested in trading for Russell.

The Bears Coach and GM wer both on the Hot Seat coming into this year.
With them selecting Fields and his progression, maybe their GM can escape the axe, but it wouldn't surprise me if he got rid of Nagy if only to save his own skin.
But it must be uncomfortably hot for both right now.

Fields has made some progress but not a lot in my estimation. He takes two steps forward and one back. Still very inconsistent. I'm still not sure he's a starting caliber NFL QB.

Trevor Lawrence is struggling with the Jags, the Giants appear to be giving up on Daniel Jones, Justin Fields has had a rough year for the Bears, Trey Lance has been an abortion for the Niners, and the Jets are having second thoughts about Zach Wilson. It's been a rough year for the QB class of 2021...except for Mac Jones.

I think Meyer is gold for another year.

Another year under Meyer's administration and Lawrence will be ruined. He will be Darnold II.
