Need another reason to love our punter?

Jon Ryan on his failed run: "I couldn't just press L2 and jump outside. I'm a middle aged white guy. It doesn't quite work that way."

He shouldn't have taken off running in the first place. Yes, the snap was bad, but he had time to recover and get a running punt off. It wouldn't have been a bad move if it was 4th and less than 5.

Cmon Riv...the guy threw a TD in last year's NFCCG, and saw another opportunity to make a big play....cut him some slack.

On the replay, you can see if he tried to punt it right away it most likely would have been blocked. But the guy who was charging dove, so when Ryan pulled up it took that guy out of the play. After that, I agree, he could have then punted, but by then, he had committed to running in his head. Just didn't work out.

I will always remember him giving the "discount double check belt style" to McCarthy after he threw the TD last year as McCarthy was the one that cut him from Green Bay.

And of course, he is Canadian, so I gotta defend him :D

Hey, I love the guy! He's one of the best punters in the game and one of our longest tenured Seahawks. But he made a bad decision on that play.

But I do want to mention something really significant that Ryan did do. Unlike Minnesota's place kick holder, Ryan held without gloves, which allowed him to spin the ball so the laces were facing away from Hauschka. That was something that the Minnesota holder couldn't do with gloved hands, was spin the ball, and they paid for it big time.

Perhaps being from Canada was what allowed him to brave the elements like he did.

Ryan's boneheaded play was one of many bizarre things that happened. I watched the game in the bar at Sun Mountain on a shitty little TV. I re watched it last night on my 55. What an awesome spectacle. I feel better about next weekend after watching the game minus the beer goggles. Seattle barely missed plays that would have blown that game open. If they make those plays this weekend they will be fine.

Aah,just bustin your chops a bit Riv...deep down, I know Ryan had no business running that ball. I'll blame Gresham for putting him a bad spot.

I will say for the rest of the game when they were punting, I was admittedly nervous about the snaps and the ability for Ryan to catch the ball...he has a couple slips in the past even on good snaps.

Good point about the hold, in those conditions, every little bit helps, and the ability to spin the laces on Hauschka's FG was important. If I recall, the distance was around 45 yards.

Bill A posted a link to a really good analysis of Walsh's missed FG, it listed three main factors for the botched attempt and one was the inability of the holder to spin the ball so the laces were facing forward. It really opened my eyes.

I'm not sure why the Vikings holder insisted on wearing gloves if it was going to affect his ability to perform his job. He had is little pouch to keep his hands warm and wouldn't have had to have them exposed to the cold air for more than 30 seconds or so. I routinely work in a freezer where it's -10 to -15 and have to use my bare hand/fingernail to peel off copies of pallet tickets and you'd be surprised at how long you can go before your hands start getting really cold. I can understand the quarterback wearing gloves as he's out there for 10-15 minutes at a time, but a holder that's out there for just one play? Pretty wimpy if you ask me.

Yup- I've said it a million times since Sunday: the cold kept them in it neutering our offense, and it looks like it finally bit them, too.

Tough sh*t, Minnesota.

Was that the only kick into the wind? Looking back its Minnesota that was lucky to even be in a position to win. The weather was hardest on Russell, he missed enough throws that would have made the game a joke. But hey the Hawks won the 4th quarter 10-0 and its not good till it splits the uprights so tough nuggets indeed Vikes.

I... don't know- I didn't keep track of that.

What I *do* know is that 25-below-zero conditions will cause a lot of passes to sail, hikes to go awry, communication to be tough, and... field goals to be missed.

The cold kept them in it- it just wasn't enough to push them over the line and listening to them whine and b*tch like they handed us the game is aggravating. He *does* make that kick more often than not, but Russell hits those passes more often than not, too, and so on.

(It's also worth noting their kicker missed 4 extra points this year- he is anything but automatic)

No Hawks kicked one from 28 yard line in but I heard something on radio that due to cold weather and wind Hawks considered kicking from 27 (47 total yards for kick) yard line would be max and all field goals made my minni where on other side of field with wind in back. Also I can't remember what game it was (maybe steelers game) where they missed twice in same game maybe our special teams get's more in kicker their head than we think specially with Sherman almost deflecting one in minni, pressure can be a b1tch from time to time, who knows and who (other than minni fans) cares
