Bellicheck NAILS the Wilson comp!

He couldn't be more right.
I've long wracked my mind trying to think of who he (Wilson) compares to historically.
I've said Fran Tarkenton, and Steve Young, as well as a couple others. Those two in particular both played similar styles, but that's not quite it. Close but not quite right.

Leave it to Bill to NAIL IT!

Roger the Dodger Staubach. His run ability kept Dallas in every game, they ALWAYS had a chance at the end with him there.
Captain Comeback, and Captain America were two of his other nicknames. They fit his personality to a tee.
The real thing that drove Roger though was an INTENSE DRIVE TO COMPETE!!! Roger LOVES to compete, still. Just watch him play flag football, and listen to his interviews after. It's hilarious how SERIOUS he takes competing.

Nice call Bellicheck. You nailed it.

But, but ... I hated Roger!

And I love Russel ... so that can't be right.

In all seriousness though, on the field there are some strong similarities.

I still like the Fran Tarkenton comparison better. They are both the same build, almost exactly the same height, and Tarkenton used to use that same reverse spin to avoid sacks that Russell uses. As a matter of fact, I think Russell once said that he copied his style after watching film of Tarkenton. Both were more elusive than Roger the Dodger.

To be fair, there IS a regular poster here that compared him to Rodger the Dodger quite some time ago ( like late last season) and said it was the most accurate comparison, I had thought it was RD, but obviously that isn't who it was...... Anyone else remember the poster that made that comparison well before BB?? Could it have been Kal??

In another forum, one poster posted a picture of Russell posing with Fran Tarkenton. One of the things I like about Russell is that he has a good sense of history and respects the game and former players, something that at times doesn't seem to me to be present in a lot of today's athletes as well as a lot of today's fans.

Huh...I must have missed that. I'd love to know who made that comparison here. Can't believe I didn't see it.
The thing is, if you watch old film of Roger, you watch the way he runs, the way he scrambles around to extend plays while still looking down field to throw. Yeah I can totally see Russell in that. His Captain America personality, his leadership ability...man yeah his leadership, just like Roger.

I know Bob said he hated Roger Staubauch, I never did. I can't hate on ex military. I am a Navy guy after all, and even before joining, I've always had a soft spot for guys who were in the Navy. Roger and Randy White (who was just a really cool tough guy) were the two Cowboys who I never could hate.

But yeah, I just thought it was so cool that FINALLY someone found a comp that IMO totally fits. Not surprised it was Bellicheck, the guy may be a cheater, but he knows football.

Hated Roger the Dodger because he was a Cowboy, not for his play or anything else about him. I just object to every single thing about that team.

I remember an interview they did with Roger when he stated that he likes sex just as much as Joe Namath does, just that he does it with one woman. Staubach projected a clean cut, mom and apple pie contrast to other more flamboyant players like Namath. At least in that regard, Russell has some common threads with Staubach. Clean cut, very proper and courteous.
