It seems to me he's a bit streaky in that he has some good games where he's really on and then has some bad games where he isn't as good.
Maybe the new Offense will help him with that and get him to be more consistent.

Who said that Geno was 'terrible'? It certainly wasn't me. The worst I said was that he's not a franchise quarterback.

Realizing that a lot of it has to do with scheme and play calling, what I want to see Geno improve on is his red zone and 3rd down conversion percentages. Last season, he had one of the worst red zone completion percentages amongst starting QB's at just under 42%, and as a team, we were in the bottom 1/3 on 3rd down.

Not sure anyone here is flat calling Geno terrible. I for one believe he gives us the best chance to win now over Sam Howell. I think Geno is a decent starter, but no where near a top tier QB. He did look good in his first drive, and hopefully that carries on into the season. The open topic of extending his contract is a worthy discussion given his age, and his recent play last year where he was up and down. To be fair the defense last year was so horrid that it put Geno is a very tough situations, and the lack play creativity was mostly not his doing. If he comes out and plays well I wouldn't have a problem extending a couple of years while we develop a younger QB.

I wouldn't want to extend Geno more than a couple of years. His Cap hit is only $26.4M this year and it goes up to $38.5M next year. His Dead Cap next year is $13.5M but with QB salaries skyrocketing, he will want a lot more.
Maybe use 2 Void years to a 2 year extension to keep the Cap hit low but a fairly high guaranteed salary.
A lot depends on how he plays this year, of course.

Extending Geno is expensive. If you have to lose other high quality players to do so, not sure why that would be smart. We all know how this works for QBs other than Patrick Mahomes. You want to have a very strong team around a QB on a first contract to make a good run at the Super Bowl in the modern day. I think it would be best to not use up huge cap space to extend a QB that is unlikely to be a Super Bowl winner, when you can build a very strong team, draft a quality QB, and have them on a first contract as he gets going.

Geno was a backup that finally proved good enough to be a starter. But we've been 9-8 two years under Geno. Sure, that is with a crap defense.

So I guess we'll see what Geno can do with a hopefully vastly improved defense. If he can show this year with a vastly improved defense that he can take you deeper in the playoffs, then maybe we extend him as he earns the extension. But at this point in time right now, I say this is the year the team finds out what Geno can do with a better defense. This team has a lot of defensive talent and a new defensive head coach. We're lacking strong LBs, but the D-line is the best we've seen in years and the secondary should be fairly good. So what can Geno do with an improved defense?

If by the end of the year we're competing in the divisional round or conference championship with Geno and a top 10 defense, then maybe we extend him. It doesn't change we still gotta draft a guy and get them developed.

If Howell is the QB of the future for the longer term, then we should move on from Geno after this or next year, but if they draft a QB early then Geno's the better choice as a bridge QB. So a shorter term extension could be an answer.
But a lot depends on how things go this year and in the draft.

One thing is for sure, our defensive depth looks really suspect. Coughing up 33 points to the Browns 3rd stringers isn't giving me a lot of confidence.

Macdonald seemed pretty pissed.

I wouldn't be surprised if we were pretty active on adding veteran cuts from other teams to the defense this week, especially now with Nwosu and Burns hurt and parting ways with Taylor and Jackson.

Lot of youngins playing, too. Glad to see MacDonald pissed about it. Use it as a learning experience and get these young guys pointed in the right direction.

The Seahawks are trading for LB Trevis Gipson from the Jags. He's a pass rusher like Mafe so that's a bit of depth.
Going back to the Jags is said to be a late round pick.

This has me a little worried about the severity of Nwosu's injury he suffered on Saturday. He is such an integral part of the D, if he misses any games it doesn't bode well for the team. They were awful from the time he went out last year to the end of the season.

Almost 95% of those players won't be playing game during the season. The first part of the 1st qtr is where is it matters. I think our depth on defense will be fine, and we have gotten quite younger from prior years. So it will be time and development before we have a great defense with all the moving parts. From last year our defense is much improved, wouldn't say and elite defense, but much improved.
